In Loving Memory of Dorothea M Lang
The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) was deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dorothea M Lang, midwife advocate, Past President of The American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM), ICM’s representative to the United Nations in New York and benefactor.
Dorothea’s longstanding contribution and dedication to midwives and to ICM was deeply appreciated. Dorothea represented ICM and midwives in the New York United Nations meetings and events for many years, always advocating strongly for midwives and midwifery. She worked always to ensure that midwives were seen and their voices heard.
Dorothea was a generous benefactor to ICM; funding ICM Council events and sponsoriong midwives. In 2014 at the 30th ICM Triennial Congress in Prague she funded a triennial award in her name, the Dorothea Lang Award, which recognizes an exceptional midwife who has demonstrated leadership and vision during their work. Additionally, in 2016 Dorothea donated funds to document the history of ICM to be launched in 2019 as part of the ICM’s centenary celebration.
Dorothea’s death is a loss not only to her family, friends and to ACNM but to ICM and the entire Midwifery profession.
ICM sends their heartfelt condolences to Dorothea’s family and friends and to the ACNM
Her memories will forever live in our hearts
