Paraguay's Midwives Triumph
With the passing of the ‘Midwives Professional Practice’ Law, women and children will have access to high quality care from qualified sexual and reproductive health care personnel, writes Sandra Oyarzo Torres.
Thousands of Paraguayan midwives have taken to the streets recently, in public demonstrations to demand a law to regulate professional practice. On October 1st 2015, the Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies supported the decision of the Senate and rejected the Executive’s attempt to stop a law regulating the professional practice of midwives.
Many midwives also attended the sessions in which the topic was discussed and approved in both Chambers. The previous ban against such a law was finally rejected after the Chamber of Deputies’ ratification, and the law was automatically passed.
This is a significant triumph for Paraguayan Midwives, led by the Paraguayan Midwives’Assocation President, Luz Torres.
