Addressing perinatal depression requires a culturally sensitive approach, focusing on emotional distress in maternal care, especially for vulnerable populations like Māori women in New Zealand.

50,000 Happy Birthdays was led by ICM and national midwives’ associations (MAs) in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania. The programme ran from 2018 – 2020, and aimed to train, equip and support MAs, midwives and other health care providers with the skills they need to save the lives of mothers and newborns.

World leaders have committed to achieving UHC by 2030, and it is imperative that midwives and midwives’ associations are included as part of UHC planning at all levels – local (including facility- and community-level), regional and national.
