Bridging science and practice
ICM Vice President, Debrah Lewis, attended the World Congress of Surgery, Obstetrics, Trauma and Anesthesia (WCSOTA) in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The congress was held on 16-17th of October and centered on bridging science and practice, by sharing knowledge to advance surgical, obstetrical, trauma, and anesthesia care.
The congress took place following the WHO Global Initiative for Emergency & Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC), 5th Biennial Meeting, on October 14-15th, 2013. This global meeting convened multidisciplinary stakeholders representing health authorities & professionals, NGOs, civil and professional societies, local and international organizations.
Building on the momentum of the GIEESC meeting, the World Congress of Surgery, Obstetrics, Trauma and Anesthesia was opened by the Minister of Health of Trinidad & Tobago.

The objectives of the congress were as follows:
1) To recognize global surgical care issues and challenges that pertain to key cross-cutting issues including accessibility, sustainability, cost-effectiveness;
2) Describe the global surgical research agenda, identifying current gaps and future areas of critical focus;
3) Outline effective strategies and innovations for supporting health systems strengthening and capacity building in under-resourced settings.
The meeting has been fruitful, bringing together regional and international experts from the public and private sector. Latest research, technology and innovation surrounding the global delivery of surgery, obstetrics, trauma, anesthesia, nursing and midwifery was shared. Read more about the meeting here.
ICM seized the opportunity having important stakeholders in Trinidad and held a workshop focusing on competency based education for midwifery educators.
