Extending Congress Learning Beyond Borders – Post Congress Webinar Series (Session 2)

14 October 2026 @ 14:00 CEST
Online
Hosted By: ICM

The 34th ICM Triennial Congress brought together thousands of participants from around the world to exchange knowledge, showcase research, and strengthen the global midwifery community.

Unfortunately, some presenters with accepted oral presentations and workshops were unable to attend the Congress due to visa-related barriers and could not share their work in Lisbon.

This post-Congress webinar series provides these presenters with an opportunity to share their accepted work with the global midwifery community, ensuring that valuable contributions are not lost and that more midwives around the world can benefit from the knowledge and research presented at the Congress.

Learn more about this session:

Join us for an Oral Presentation Showcase featuring two research presentations from the 34th ICM Triennial Congress. This session brings together experiences and evidence from Nepal and Uganda, highlighting how midwives and midwifery-led models of care can contribute to better maternal and newborn outcomes, while also examining the practice environments that shape the care midwives are able to provide.

The session will feature:

Experiences of transitioning into a midwifery model of care in Nepal, presented by Arpana BC Kalaunee

This presentation explores the implementation of an onsite midwife/skilled birth attendant-led birthing unit at Bharatpur Hospital in Nepal. It shares early findings on women’s experiences and outcomes, including satisfaction, referrals and complications, while highlighting the importance of informed decision-making, women’s autonomy, interprofessional collaboration and strong leadership in establishing sustainable midwifery models of care.

A disabling practice environment: Barriers to and facilitators of immediate postpartum and newborn care by midwives in one district in central Uganda, presented by Ssemwanga Nassifu

This qualitative study examines the barriers and facilitators affecting midwives’ ability to provide immediate postpartum and newborn care in a district hospital in central Uganda. The findings highlight how working environments, leadership, management and professional support influence care, as well as the differences between the perspectives of frontline midwives and managers.

Together, the presentations offer insights into both what enables effective midwifery-led care and what is needed to create practice environments where midwives can use their skills to their full potential.
