Chile Establishes National Chief Midwife Position

ICM
2 September 2020

On August 31st, as part of Latin American Day of Midwifery 2020, the Colegio de Matronas y Matrones de Chile revealed their country’s appointment of a National Chief Midwife during a Facebook Live event attended by government officials, students, and hundreds of midwives and other healthcare practitioners. Giorgia Cartes Bravo, a Coordinator Midwife of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Unit of the San José Hospital, will take on this new and exciting challenge within Chile’s Ministry of Health. Next to England and Kyrgyzstan, Chile is only the third country in the world to establish a Chief Midwife posting.

We hope this appointment inspires other countries in Latin America and around the world to develop like-minded roles within their health ministries.
