This document serves as a companion to the ICM Standards for Midwifery Education, providing supplementary information and insights.

After graduating in midwifery and working clinically for a few years, Burcu Avcibay Vurgeç decided to pursue a career in midwifery research. She began as a research assistant, then earned a master’s degree followed by a doctorate. Over time, became the Head of the Midwifery Department at her alma mater, Cukurova University in Türkiye.

The midwifery profession, as defined by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM), is new in India. India, like many countries is moving towards embedding midwifery into its health system as a way to improve sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health outcomes.

Co-developed by ICM and Laerdal, the ICM Midwifery Competencies is a solution to help midwifery educators prepare students for clinical practice.

The Young Midwife Leaders (YML) Programme is a part-time, two-year learning and professional development experience for 15 early-career midwives and 5 executive midwives from ICM’s member associations (MAs).

The Strengthening Midwifery Services (SMS) project, funded by BMGF works to build national midwives’ associations’ (MA) capacity to advocate for and deliver high quality midwife-led services and to help MAs to be better equipped to manage the day-to-day operations of their associations.

With support from the MacArthur Foundation, ICM worked with the midwives and midwives’ associations in Mexico.

The More Happy Birthdays Project, supported by Latter-day Saint Charities (LDSC) and the Rwanda Ministry of Health (MoH), has improved the provision and experience of care for women and newborns in Rwanda by training maternal and newborn health providers in life-saving skills.

With support from Direct Relief, ICM has provided emergency grants to Türkiye, Morocco, and Ukraine as part of our response to humanitarian and climate related crises.

50,000 Happy Birthdays was led by ICM and national midwives’ associations (MAs) in Ethiopia, Rwanda and Tanzania. The programme ran from 2018 – 2020, and aimed to train, equip and support MAs, midwives and other health care providers with the skills they need to save the lives of mothers and newborns.
