2025 International Day of the Midwife – Ghana

The Ghana Registered Midwives Association (GRMA) will host a two-day celebration in Takoradi, Ghana, to mark the 2025 International Day of the Midwife (IDM). This event will recognize and honor the essential role of midwives in Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly their contributions during times of crisis.

Day 1: Midwifery Simposium

Date: 5 May  2025

Location: Takoradi Technical University

The symposium will provide a platform for discussion, learning, and collaboration among midwives, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders. The focus will be on the role of midwives in emergency response and crisis settings, as well as innovations and leadership in midwifery practice.

Key Focus Areas:

  • Midwives’ Role in Crisis Situations: A moderated panel discussion highlighting the contributions of midwives in emergency response and disaster management.
  • Innovations in Midwifery Care: Exploration of new technologies and approaches that strengthen midwifery in challenging environments.
  • Midwifery Leadership and Advocacy: Discussions aimed at empowering midwives with leadership and advocacy skills to drive change in maternal and child health.
  • Governance and Support Systems: Emphasizing the importance of supportive policies and environments for effective midwifery care.

Objectives:

  • To acknowledge midwives’ vital roles during crises.
  • To share experiences, best practices, and innovations in midwifery care.
  • To build capacity and strengthen professional competencies among midwives.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Improved emergency response and maternal health outcomes.
  • Strengthened midwifery practice through knowledge sharing and skill development.

Day 2: IDM National Launch & Awards Ceremony

Date: 6 May 2025

Location: Latter Day Saints Park

The official IDM National Launch and Awards Ceremony will celebrate the dedication and achievements of midwives across the country.

Key Highlights:

  • Awards Ceremony: Recognition of 23 outstanding midwives who have demonstrated excellence and innovation in their work.
  • Keynote Speakers: With the First Lady of Ghana, Her Excellency Mrs. Lordina Mahama, as the Special Guest of Honour, along with renowned healthcare leaders sharing insights on maternal and newborn health.
  • Networking Opportunities: A gathering point for midwives, healthcare professionals, educators, and policymakers to build relationships and foster collaboration.

Target Audience:

  • Registered midwives, student midwives, and midwifery educators.
  • Healthcare professionals including doctors and nurses who work alongside midwives.
  • Policymakers, healthcare administrators, and stakeholders supporting maternal and child health.
