White Ribbon Alliance (WRA)
The White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood is an international coalition of individuals and organizations formed to promote increased public awareness of the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns in the developing, as well as, developed countries.
The white ribbon is dedicated to the memory of all women who have died in pregnancy and childbirth. In some cultures, white symbolizes mourning and in others it symbolizes hope and life. The white ribbon represents this dual meaning globally. The White Ribbon Alliance not only works to sustain life and hope for all women, but also mourns and honors those women who did not survive pregnancy or childbirth.
ICM works with WRA in various advocacy activities (see Uganda programme) and ICM and WRA have agreed in subsequent dissemination meetings that the organisations will work together so that advocacy is intertwined in activities.
Currently WRA is coordinating the Global Midwifery Advocacy Group, of whic ICM is a member. The group aims to develop an effective strategy and collaborate around midwifery and midwives.
What is the Global Midwifery Advocacy Campaign?
The goal of the Campaign is to ensure that all childbearing women and newborns receive quality, dignified care provided by midwives who are valued, respected, and supported in a team environment. The campaign seeks to persuade (targets)that midwives are the experts on the support and systems needed to ensure every woman and every baby receive quality, dignified, respectful health care.

Midwives' Voices, Midwives' Realities report
In 2016, ICM, WRA and WHO launched a joint report entilted - "Midwives' Voices, Midwives' Realities" calling for an end to the discrimination, harrasment and lack of respect that hinder midwives' ability to provide quality care to women and newborns. Click HERE to read more.
