ICM Africa Regional Conference, Lesotho 17-21 October 2016

FOLLOW-UP VISIT TO INDEPENDENT MIDWIVES ASSOCIATION OF LESOTHO IN PREPARATION FOR 4TH ICM AFRICA REGIONAL CONFERENCE AND 2ND CONAMA GENERAL MEETING
 
The Independent Midwives Association, Lesotho (IMAL) won the bid to host the next Africa Triennial Regional Conference during the 3rd ICM – Africa Regional Conference that was held in Nairobi – Kenya in 2013.  The ICM Regional Board Member for Anglophone Africa paid a courtesy call on IMAL on behalf of ICM to ascertain the level of preparation towards hosting the conference. She arrived in Lesotho on November 29 and departed on December, 5, 2015.
 
The Purpose of the Conference is to: Strengthen midwifery education, practice, regulation and associations in the Africa Region with special focus on countries with high maternal mortality.
 
Specific Objectives of the Conference shall include:

i.          Influencing  and guiding  positive action towards maternal and newborn health improvements   through  policy and decision making in support of midwifery service delivery

ii.         Maintain an international multi-sectoral midwifery forum by sustaining  dialogue, creating networks, sharing best practices and fostering collaboration among midwifery associations and partners on the continent and globally

iii.        Focusing on midwifery research which will impact on improving maternal health and reducing maternal and child mortality and disability.

iv.        Building capacity for quality midwifery care in disaster/epidemic periods

v.         Creating a platform for young midwife empowerment  towards leadership and advocacy

Given these provisions, Dr Jemima Dennis-Antwi specifically set out to work with IMAL and stakeholders to:

o          Pay courtesy call to the MOH, Government and Development Partners to solicit their cooperation, participation and sponsorship

o          Set up the Local organising  committee (LOC) and to hold its first meeting 

o          Identify a conference organising company and include in LOC meetings

o          Potential members of  Scientific committee

o          Discuss the concept of a flyer and website for the conference and initiate plans for its development

o          Administrative Issues: Draft letters of invitation for circulation to potential guests, speakers and sponsors

o          Outline Next steps towards a successful conference

Guided by these objectives, Dr Dennis-Antwi with the support of IMAL President-Mrs Francisca engaged with diverse stakeholders for success. The following describes actions taken during the visit.

The conference theme and sub themes agreed on were as follows:

o          Improving and Sustaining Quality Maternal and Newborn Health

o          Reaching Every Woman and Every Child: Scaling Up Midwifery Education and Services

o          Midwifery Research: Knowledge Generation and Innovation Towards Sustainable Quality Care

o          Midwifery Policy And Practice Towards Quality Care

o          Midwives Working With Communities to Attain Quality SDGs
